MARTINEZ SETS BIG TARGET FOR HIMSELF
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has set a big target of becoming the best goalkeepers in the world for himself. This is according to Villa coach Neil Cutler who revealed that the Argentine national team star has daily goal reminders pinned up in his locker to help him on the way to achieving the aforementioned target.
Martinez has grown to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League on the back of his transfer from North London giants Arsenal. He produced a series of impressive performances for the Gunners during the final nine league games of the 2019/20 season. The Argentine shot stopper was a big factor in the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph at the end of the season. Arsenal saw off Manchester City in the semi-finals before they came from behind to beat Chelsea and win the FA Cup title in 2020.
The injury to German international Bernd Leno led to an extended run for Martinez in the Arsenal team and he wanted more afterwards. The Aston Villa shot stopper wanted guarantees on being the first choice goalkeeper ahead of Leno. In the end, Arsenal sanctioned his transfer to Villa in a deal that could rise to £20m depending on add-ons. Martinez had two years left on his Gunners deal before his transfer to Aston Villa.
Martinez has been influential for both club (Aston Villa) and country (Argentina) in the past one year. He was instrumental to the Copa America tournament win for the Argentine national team in the summer. Martinez helped the two-time world champions end a run of 28 yearswithout a trophy at the Copa America tournament.
